Drones to patrol Georges River for anti-social and speeding jetskiers

DRONES could be patrolling the Georges River in an effort to crack down on anti-social behaviour jetskiers on the Georges River.

The State Government will invest more than $1 million as part of a crackdown on the Georges River, Botany Bay and Port Hacking.

Speeding jetskiers have been a constant issue on the Georges River and there have been calls for a blanket ban.

But Roads Minister Duncan Gay announced a seven-point plan, which includes licence suspension, jetski confiscation and increased patrols.

Steve McDonald was injured when kayaking on Georges River after a crash with a jetskier.

As part of the Government’s toughest stance yet on dangerous behaviour by jetski users, the eight-knot speed limit in the Picnic Point area on the Georges River will be extended by 2km.

Roads and Maritime Services and NSW Police will conduct additional patrols and there will be a hotline to report concerns.

The Government will also look into the use of drones to deter illegal activity as well as extra exclusion zones.

The announcement comes after The Express reported in October Picnic Point kayaker Steve McDonald, was injured after his kayak collided with a jetski.

Mr McDonald, 61, suffered extensive injuries to his hip, leg and foot. Doctors told him he could lose his foot.

Roads and Maritime Services Boating Safety Officers will carry out more patrols on Georges River.

He has since pushed for change to prevent similar incidents occurring.

He said last week’s announcement was “a step towards the right direction”.

Mr Gay said “incremental changes” had been made over the years, but “we didn’t get the result we needed”.

“There are still families … that are finding their ability to enjoy the waterways are being threatened by others,” Mr Gay said.

East Hills state Liberal MP Glenn Brookes said the situation was “increasingly getting worse and worse”.

“To actually lose their toys as such – that will be the strongest message we can give,” Mr Brookes said.

There have been eight jetski accidents on the Georges River in the past 12 months, according to the RMS.
