Jet skiers slam vigilantes
JET Ski riders have accused over-zealous Gold Coasters of resorting to guerrilla tactics to frame weekend wave riders for hooning.
Queensland Personal Watercraft Club president Jordan Ross said vendetta-driven residents often camped out behind bushes and trees for hours to catch jet ski riders doing the wrong thing.
“These crazy people call the police as soon as they see us,” he said.
“We pay registration and have a right to be in the waterways without being harassed.
“They have a clear vendetta against jet ski riders that is just wasting police resources.
“Police are really fed up with having to sort out silly disputes.”
His comments came after Gold Coast Waterways Authority chief executive officer Hal Morris said cameras would be rolled out across the Gold Coast to catch “hooning jet ski riders”.
The plan will slowly be phased in if a camera placed at Currumbin Alley is found to make the area safer.
“Speed is a safety issue and it can create wash, which damages our rivers,” he said.
“We need to make the rivers and beaches safer for everyone that uses them. If people know they are being watched they will behave.”
The cameras, which cost $3000 a unit, will be directly hooked up to police tablets and smart phones.
The officers will be able to monitor the feeds and control the zoom and panning functions.
Mr Ross said the cameras could help stop members of the community from being vigilantes.
“Most of us are doing the right thing every time we ride,” he said.
“If these cameras can help catch people who hooning are driving dangerously then I am definitely in support of them.
“It is always a few people who ruin it for the rest of us.”
